Noctis did this? [Regis can't help but sound surprised. It's not that he doubts his son's skills, but at the same time, he would have expected him to take better care during a spar. Unless...
He gives Gladio a skeptical look.]
Did you hide how badly he was hurting you?
[Shields. He has one and he knows how it is sometimes.]
He had some shit he needed to work out. And needed a punching bag that punched back.
[What had happened earlier had not been training in the slightest. It had been a means of burning off frustration. And Gladio had, he hoped, been able to help some. Though he worried if he'd made some parts worse...
Gladio sighed and gave Regis a crooked smile.]
Haven't really trained with him and his armiger before. Bit more intense than our usual training sessions. [Both in Havenwell and back home...]
[Regis frowns when he hears Gladio's answer, but he can't bring himself to speak ill of Noctis for doing what he did. They have all had times when they have needed to release tension like that. At least he acted to take care of the frustration instead of bottling it up.
Still, it would have been nice if Gladio had not been hurt as a result.]
Your father said something similar the first time he faced me using the Armiger at full force. [Regis returns Gladio's smile before heading back to the counter and starting to look for something in one of the cabinets.]
Between you and me? That 'something similar' involved a lot more curse words than you used.
[If Regis had even tried to speak ill of Noct, Gladio would have shot him down. He felt no anger or upset at Noct at all. If anything he felt bad for not being strong enough to have given him a better sparring partner. But in time he was sure he could become that. He could get his strength back, eventually.
He gave a low laugh and moved a hand to idly rub his right shoulder.]
Guess I'm more laid back than my old man. That... and I was impressed. Noct is stronger. I was proud of him. Not sure if he understood I actually meant that though... [He'd told him, but whether Noct believed it, Gladio wasn't too sure.]
Noctis has trouble believing it when people tell him he has done well. Keep at it. He is slowly getting better. We merely need to give him some time. Ah...there it is. [Regis pulls a small basket from one of the cabinets and then finally makes his way over to Gladio. He eyes the Shield's shoulder before pulling a strange cross between a pillow and a pad from the basket.]
Cor was still experimenting with a lot of things when he was sent home, but this prototype actually works. The cloth is filled with some herbs and uncooked rice. You can heat the rice and it will work like a heating pad of sorts only the size of it makes it a little easier to use for around the neck, head, and perhaps an injured shoulder. This was not all Noctis' doing, was it? How long have you been nursing it for?
[Time was what he was giving him. All the time in the world.]
Around five to six months. I was wounded on a mission.
[He replied, sounding distracted with his gaze on the odd pillow in Regis' hands. It sounded interesting enough, Gladio was more than willing to try anything right then.]
You will likely want to keep this then if it works. We can switch out the herbs for fresher ones later if need be.
[Regis sets the basket to the side for the moment and then kneads the pillow between his hands for a few moments, letting his magic heat the rice inside. It doesn't take long for a light herbal smell to fill the air. He then holds the pillow out to Gladio.]
Drape this across where it hurts the worst. Don't be afraid to lean back to hold it in place if need be. Unlike a heating pad, this will not overheat.
[He waited and when the pillow was handed over, he took it with a smile of thanks and placed it across his shoulder. It was very warm, but it felt real damn good too. He groaned softly and did as he was told, leaning back to help hold the pillow it place.
[Regis smiles when he sees that the pillow is helping. It's just a shame that Cor isn't here to see he was right about it.]
Did you have normal heating pads at least?
[The herbs help, of course, but the train had to have at least a few medical necessities...or maybe not. Regis can't help but wince has he remembers what Tony told him about how limited food was.]
I had a friend. Glorfindel. He could heal, but he could make his hands real nice and warm too. He'd try and help my shoulder sometimes, if it got too stiff.
[Gladio considered his words, and regarded Regis carefully for a long moment, before he spoke again.]
There was... someone I cared for. On the train. Someone I wanted to protect. I was able to request a certain amount of metals and commission an elf friend of Tony's, Feanor, to make something for me. I'd just expected it to be a thing that this person could wear and remember me... Feanor imbued it with his magic. Told me that when it was worn, the person would more than remember me, they'd sense me. As a protective presence...
[As he listens to Gladio's story, Regis' eyes widen, his expression becoming one of awe.]
That is incredible! Not only did he put some of himself into the gift through his work on it, he put part of you in as well. [The only other thing that Regis knows of that could be considered similar is the Ring of the Lucii, but it is obvious that this item was made without binding Gladio's soul to it.]
[When his thoughts where pulled away from his memories and back to the issue at hand, Gladio turned away from Regis to glance toward his shoulder. He sat up a bit, shifted his arm and experimentally rolled his shoulder to test how much movement he had in it. Then he smiled.]
Better. Nothin a hot bath and some rest won't fix the rest of. This thing worked wonders.

Sabertucks are small fry. This was the handiwork of your son... Guess he had somethin to work out.

Now this I wish I'd had back on the train.

[And no, very much not binding his soul, just an impressive kind of elf magic that had left him indebted to Feanor.]

[But that is okay. Some things are just like that. Unique. One of a kind.]
How are you feeling? Is your shoulder loosening up any?
